Rich Internet Applications (RIA's)

Rich Internet Applications (RIA) are web applications that have the features and functionality of traditional desktop applications. RIA's typically transfer the processing necessary for the user interface to the web client but keep the bulk of the data (i.e. maintaining the state of the program, the data etc) back on the application server.

The web’s success has sometimes been attributed to the simplicity of HTML-based interfaces. However, the lack of interactivity in web browsers can sometimes restrict the functionality of web-based applications. ECMAScript (JavaScript) can do more than many people realize, but it has limitations. A variety of tools have been developed to address the general problem of rich internet applications. The most common is Macromedia Flash™ and Macromedia Flex™, a development kit for creating Flash-based applications.
